Students of the Department of Biomedical Technology visited the dialysis center of the Medtorgservice network

At the center, students were introduced to the entire technology of hemodialysis, showed all stages of this procedure: the water treatment system, the preparation of a liquid concentrate for hemodialysis, the hemodialysis process. The students were shown in detail the hemodialysis apparatus, the principle of its operation and design.

The dialysis center of the Medtorgservice network was opened in Tambov three years ago, becoming the first large institution of this kind in the region. Prior to this, patients underwent hemodialysis in the specialized department of the regional hospital. But the capacity of the clinic was not enough. The hospital department was working to the limit of its capabilities.

There are 15 artificial kidney machines in the hall of the hemodialysis center. In three daily shifts, the center can receive up to 90 patients per week.

Hemodialysis is an effective blood purification procedure using special equipment. With its help, the patient's blood is filtered, and all toxins and excess fluids are removed from it.

A standard hemodialysis machine is a complex device. Its main element is a dialyzer with an installed membrane for filtration, to which the patient's blood is supplied for cleaning and a dialysis solution (its parameters are also controlled by the apparatus).

“A person has about 2 million nephrons. In pathologies, the kidney tissue dies off synchronously and, alas, is not restored. Dialysis is usually attended by those who have no more than 10 percent of both kidneys as “workers”, ”explains Oleg Shmyrev, head of the dialysis center.

The visit to the dialysis center did not leave anyone indifferent. Students of the Department of Biomedical Engineering told about their impressions:

“The visit to the dialysis center turned out to be very interesting and educational for me. The operation of the entire complex from water purification to the functioning of each individual artificial kidney is an interesting task for a medical engineer. It was nice to see the patients of the center - hemodialysis equipment not only prolongs their life, but also maintains its quality at a decent level. Acquaintance with the technology of hemodialysis once again shows the importance of the chosen direction of training related to medical technology, ”said Grigory Ilyin, a student of the BBS-11 group.

“I got a good experience of visiting the dialysis center and was surprised by the performance of the entire system and staff. I learned a lot about the equipment, its purpose and functions. The employees of the center very clearly told about all the processes and operation of the hemodialysis machine. I was also amazed at how important hemodialysis equipment is, as it can support the lives of patients for many years, and it is impossible not to admire it. In the center, we saw patients who have been undergoing hemodialysis for over 20 years. This means the hemodialysis machine extended their life by 20 years, ”said Artyom Avetisyan, a student of the BBS-11 group.

“The excursion really impressed me. The patients of this center have been using the equipment 12 hours a week for many years. Because of this, they can live. And this is awesome! We tried to figure out the structure of the apparatus and the operation of the entire system, which gives life to many people. And after that we felt how important it is, and what responsibility lies with us, future engineers, ”shared Yana Shnyakina, a student of the BBS-11 group.
